Composer, organist and improviser, Thierry Escaich is a unique figure on today’s music scene and one of the major representatives of the new generation of French composers. The three aspects of his art are indissociable, allowing him in his concerts to mix creation, improvisation and interpretation in highly diverse combinations.
As a composer, Escaich tackles the most varied genres and performing forces in an ongoing quest for new sound horizons. His catalogue consists of some hundred works, their incandescent lyricism and implacable rhythm appealing to a broad public. Following in the tradition of Franck, Messiaen and Dutilleux, and not refusing the contributions of popular music or elements of sacred inspiration, Escaich’s music bears witness above all to a powerful sense of formal architecture that plunges the listener into the heart of a superposition of original sound worlds.
His highly personal style shows through as much in the intimacy of his chamber music as in vast frescoes such as the Chaconne for orchestra, the oratorio Le Dernier Évangile or the double concerto for violin and cello, Miroir d’ombres.
