About us - Our series Editors

1896 | 1996 : order the Book of centenaire!

Our publishing house was founded more a century ago in 1896 by Louis Billaudot (1871-1936) and has remained a family business. Louis Billaudot was succeeded by his two sons Robert (1910-1981) and Gérard (1911-1986), the latter managing the company single-handed from 1957. Gérard Billaudot's son-in-law François Derveaux took over in 1979 as part of a new structure called Gérard Billaudot Editeur S.A.
Florence Derveaux, François Derveaux's daughter became General Manager in February 2007. François Deveaux is still President of the Board of Directors. Thus the fourth generation of the same family runs our company.

• Until 1958 the company's catalogue featured a large amount of music for wind- and brass-band, of which some had been bought from other publishers but most of which consisted of new works.

• At the end of the 1950s, the company laid particular emphasis on two spheres:

Developing works on music teaching
and publishing instrumental & orchestral works.

This came about in two ways: by buying out publishing houses, particularly the 1958 acquisition of works published by Costallat-Richault, the publishers of Liszt, Alkan, Hummel, etc., and by Noël. This latter house not only published works by Maurice Ohana, André Jolivet, Jean Rivier and Georges Delerue, but also published teaching works, and by publishing new works by composers such as Maurice Ohana, Charles Koechlin, André Jolivet, Edison Denisov, Betsy Jolas, Darius Milhaud, Franck Martin, Arthur Honegger, Marius Constant, Jacques Ibert, Daniel-Lesur, Henri Sauguet, together with teaching works. At the same time a number of instrumental series were created. These series were directed by instrumentalists as famous as Maurice André, Jean-Pierre Rampal, and now for exemple Philippe Bernold, Renaud and Gautier Capuçon have been working on it as well.

• In 1979 François Derveaux took the decision to continue and insist on this publishing policy. It has therefore come about that our publishing house is one of France's most important in the fields of music teaching both as concerns works on music theory, instrumental methods and studies. We continue to add works to our instrumental and orchestral catalogue. In 1988 we added works published by Editions Française de Musique (formerly Radio France). These works included a large number of pieces premiered between 1947 and 1975.

We also publish a large number of contemporary composers such as Patrick Burgan, Jacques Castérède, Qigang Chen, Marc-André Dalbavie, Jean-Michel Damase, Edison Denisov, Bertrand Dubedout, Thierry Escaich, Philippe Hurel, Betsy Jolas, Philippe Leroux, Fabien Levy, Serge Nigg, Germaine Tailleferre and Alexandre Tansman, Guillaume Connesson, Martin Matalon, Andrej Adamek, Raphaël Cendo, Henri Dutilleux, Karol Beffa, Franck Bedrossian without favouring any particular style or school.

• And lastly, since 1993, as part of the rediscovery of the French musical heritage, we published 5 works part of a monumental edition of the complete works of Jean-Philippe Rameau. We have received particular support in this project from Musica Gallica.
