Description

Preluding, warming up, getting into condition... is indeed an art.

While it seems obvious that the muscles used for sound and breathing need to be warmed up, it is just as necessary to set the movements of the soul and expression into vibration. The art of preluding , written by the author of Études Mignonnes , proposes to unite and bring into resonance these two qualities of the performer's musical art. Qualities illustrated here by short, skillfully articulated texts that give ample space to imagination, invention and singing.

Two forms are proposed:

  • The prelude should be played in a measured and regular manner in order to test its capacity for expression and flexibility of sound within a given framework.
  • The fermata, resembling a free cadence, will develop the imagination as well as the internal organization of the tempo and will be stimulated by the systematic search for agogic nuances.

In any case, it will be necessary to focus on highlighting the music with a flexible, full and expressive sound and also to give a hearing to the design of the phrases and the numerous articulations.

The indications given by Gariboldi (or myself) propose an option that can be freely reinvented each time.

Once again, the aim is to vibrate and condition the expression of a game made of colors, feelings and intuitions.

Feel free to change the tempi, the nuances, the characters.

Regarding tempi, it is recommended to play the lively movement numbers slowly first (3, 6, 8, 11 for example) in order to establish a rich and supple sound. These are the famous virtues of slow work...

The systematic exploration of tonalities is also an inexhaustible source of inspiration. Transpositions are proposed by the author, and it will be useful to apply them to each issue.

This book will also be the ideal companion for your warm-up rooms . It will effectively prepare and soothe the difficult moments that sometimes precede a competition or a concert.

Now it's time for elegance, color and lyricism in this gymnastics of sound in music thanks to this Art of Prelude !
