Description
If the first legal deposit of Chant Lyrique n°5 for saxophone and piano dates from October 31, 1934, it is likely that Fernande Decruck composed it at the beginning of the 1930s.
Following the success of Chant Lyrique No. 1, the composer produced several pieces for alto saxophone and piano. Some of these compositions are titled Chant Lyrique and were among her first works for wind instrument. Her penchant for the saxophone was undoubtedly
inspired by Maurice, her husband, and saxophonist for the New York Philharmonic at the time led by conductor Arturo Toscanini. In addition, she frequented other professional saxophonists of the time such as François Combelle, then soloist for the Republican Guard.
The form and style of Chant Lyrique No. 5, No. 3, and No. 1 are similar. Each composition begins slowly and lyrically. An exploration of varied styles and tempos follows in the middle. The composition ends with a brief cadenza for the saxophone and a reminder of the original melody.
Versions 1, 3 and 5 were recorded by Jean-Pierre Baraglioli.
