Description
The Barcarolle du souvenir , written especially for the prestigious Long-Thibaud-Crespin International Competition of 2001, continues the path explored in my Concerto for piano and orchestra created by Jean-Claude Pennetier in 1997. I had hesitated for many years to write for this instrument before finding how it could fit in with my own language.
This Barcarolle is rich in numerous reminiscences from the piano repertoire. Its title refers to Chopin's Barcarolle Opus 60 , from which I quote the trill of the recapitulation at the end of the piece. It is a work conceived in a single movement. Initially dreamy, it then calls upon all the resources of virtuosity. Then the recapitulation, with its numerous ornaments, uses the principle of variation to lose itself in memory, in dreams, in each person's own memory. The Barcarolle of remembrance leaves the nuances (but not the tempi) to the free choice of the performers, thus generating an infinite variety of colors.
