"Written for flute and cello, this short virtuoso piece follows my discotoccata for clarinet and cello. But if this first piece was a dance of the living, my nocturnal toccata is a dance of shadows, sometimes joyful, often disturbing. A theme in irregular values is superimposed on a regular pulse and the resulting polyrhythm switches between the flute and the cello. Bursts of voices in the night, murmurs, muffled noises run through the piece until the final cry where the theme is howled by the flute under the cavernous harmonies of the cello."
