Description
Commissioned by the Habanera Quartet in 2020, the four elements (water, earth, air, fire) are the source of inspiration for this saxophone quartet and are represented in four movements:
• Source
• Crystal
• Helium
• Igneous
The symbol of the title of the first movement, in reference to water, sets out the main idea and develops a music that takes its source in its first gestures and the moment from which the entire quartet will flow. Water is the source of life and also that of the musical material.
A quintuplet gesture structures the entire piece and is transformed by the elements, as in “Helium” where it appears tinged with breath.
Even though each movement develops an element, many motifs are found, transformed and run through the entire piece. Like an organic structure that changes state, passing from water to solidification, sublimation and finally to fire.
The execution must be done without pause between each movement or inter-movement.
