Fragments soulevés par le vent
Violon 1
Under the tutelage of a title by the poet Philippe Jaccottet (1925-2021) – Fragments soulevés par le vent –, the three movements of this work are traversed by an instability and almost continuous changes of state, which express the amazed simplicity of a sensitive and poetic relationship with nature. Reactivating the eminently Debussy model of the wind at a time of climate peril – let us recall the Dialogue du vent et de la mer or Ce qu’a vu le vent d’Ouest – requires us to critically reflect on our perception and our listening to this natural phenomenon, and the way to approach it as a musician living in the 21st century. It also means taking a gamble on a possible shift, made necessary today: from the transcription of an idealized impression to a utopian listening to the world.

Description
One of the pieces of advice from Monsieur Croche (pen name of the critic Claude Debussy) came back to Yves Balmer when he responded to the Voce Quartet's commission to write a quartet "echoing" Debussy's: "Don't listen to anyone's advice, except that of the wind that passes and tells us the story of the world." The connection forged with Debussy in this creation, which is in no way a pastiche, is that of a relationship with the natural elements and a fascination with timbre. Like Debussy, who learned lessons from the wind and water, he sought to capture some of the volatile sensations of the wind's breath, its fluidity and fragility.
