Description

Dedicated to Marcel Mule, the Concertino for alto saxophone by Paul Pierné (1874-1952) was written in 1945 and published in 1946 by Lucien de Lacour (publisher succeeding Costallat then Gérard Billaudot Éditeur SA).

The work captivates with its elegance, characteristic of French writing of this period, and has unjustly fallen into oblivion. It consists of three movements in which the saxophone is first given a brilliant, declamatory role, then performs a gentle lament, and finally draws us into a shimmering ternary dance.

To celebrate its rebirth, this Concertino is proposed in the “Excellence” category of the 7th edition of the “International Saxo Voce Competition” in March 2020.
