Description
These "parchemins" are based on three simple thematic elements which, each in their own way, refer to the past and therefore to the central idea of the work. A rhythmic formula, a sort of "ticking," an image of inexorable time which, in various variations, calibrates the entire piece. A melodic theme launched by the trumpet in a modal E minor, a pseudo-medieval or Renaissance melody (like an ancient chant). A cell of three notes treated as a slow passacaglia whose dramatic progression advances inexorably, desperately.
The work imposes three specific types of challenges on the trumpeter. The first is lyricism, which requires great qualities of phrasing and musicality from the instrumentalist. The second is focused on breath work due to long values gradually reaching the most extreme fortissimo. Finally, in the third part, great virtuosity is required because it relies essentially on numerous double and triple articulations. This finale combines the three main thematic elements: the "old theme," the passacaglia cell in rhythmic diminutions, and the "tic-tac," also subjected to a final metamorphosis.
