Description
Au-delà du rêve (Beyond Dreams) explores a dream world in a permanent process of change. The thirty-minute concerto is in three movements, each melding seamlessly into the next over the course of a remarkably organic musical discourse.
The piece opens with a very simple ballad played by the solo violin, immediately clouded by long, somber orchestral echoes that seem to expand the sound space. With various orchestral interventions constantly introducing new harmonic colors and suggesting more rhythmic patterns, the initial melody progressively drifts towards livelier and more intense episodes (sometimes bordering on whimsical scherzos) that may appear suddenly or emerge through a slow transformation process. Nevertheless, the original ballad always manages to put a stop to these hallucinatory interludes and reassert itself, growing more lyrical and dense each time until the beginning of the second section. Clearly slower and more cadential, the central movement strikes a pictorial note through an ongoing process of harmonic distortions, exploring extreme soundscapes and blurring the sense of time. The solo violin frees itself after a long chant-like duet with the principal violin and leads to the final section. A trance-like atmosphere gradually sets in, going from ethereal mysticism to wild frenzied dancing. In the end, the mechanical, hypnotic aspect carries off everything in its path despite the initial ‘dream’ element trying to come to life again and again, up to the very last measures before the conclusion.
