Description
It Rings a Bell … is my second piano quartet, after Café 2010, a nod to Piazzolla. The title is to be taken literally – it features bell sounds – and figuratively – the piece is intended as a reminder of the litanies of the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance.
The two movements, very contrasting, are linked only by the same recourse to the canon technique and by the call made to the sounds of a church carillon. In the first, a hypnotic theme unfolds a sluggish music, with a languid tempo. The non-modulating character explores all registers, from the sepulchral low note of the knell to the high-pitched tinkling of children's bells, all in a scent of assumed archaism. Contrasting with this climate of mystery and dream, the second movement is a whirlwind of energy. Created by variegations of strings, themes begin, repeat themselves in an increasingly violent ostinato, become invasive, and find their conclusion in a theatrical deluge of sound.
These two movements can be played independently of each other or linked together.
