Description
Fireworks is a joyful and festive work for symphony orchestra, premiered during The Last Night of the Proms by the BBC Symphony Orchestra. It illustrates the various stages of a firework display, from its first spark to its dazzling finale.
In the evening glow serves as a brief and gentle introduction, sketching out the sonic landscape. The first glimmers—those of a starry night sky—appear as shimmering textures in the strings and bowed percussion (glockenspiel, vibraphone, crotales). The horns introduce the central motif, which will run throughout the entire piece.
The Initial flashes of fireworks gradually emerge within the orchestra : at first discreet and crackling in the strings, then more striking in the woodwinds and brass. A pulse arises and the intensity builds toward a first radiant climax. The texture then softens, and the solo horn recalls the main motif, supported by a luminous and sparkling texture from the strings and keyboards (harp, marimba, vibraphone). This episode fades out in wisps of smoke played by the strings.
After a brief silence and the extinguishing of the first lights, the music resumes with a hazy, almost smoky texture, from which some woodwinds take flight and the timpani herald the ascent to come (The Moment before…). Over a motoric pattern in the strings and marimba, pizzicati in the violins and crackling motifs in the woodwinds mingle with shimmering bursts in the percussion (vibraphone and glockenspiel played with bows). Oboe and bassoon sing the main theme, while the energy gradually expands. Harp glissandi, brilliant percussion (crotales, glockenspiel), and bright trumpets fill the sound space with vivid, glowing colors over a continuous pulse.
The orchestra finally reaches its peak with lush woodwinds and powerful brass. All sections join in a grand, radiant outburst. This final bouquet unfolds in a festive explosion where every instrument plays a part. The horns, raised bells-up, and the timpani echo the central motif, while metallic percussions and high woodwinds trace luminous trails across the sky. The full orchestra comes together to celebrate this dazzling burst of colors in the night sky, marking the conclusion of the piece (…the Grand finale! ).
