Description

Sonata for Cello and Piano, composed in 2016, is dedicated to the great French cellist Gautier Capuçon. This three-movement piece lasts approximately 19 minutes. The first movement, with its energetic character, is in traditional sonata form. The second, slow and expressive, is in Lied form. The third and final movement is a virtuoso and sparkling rondo. The first movement uses only a single theme and develops it in rhythmic, harmonic, and melodic variations that act simultaneously as an "A theme" and a "B theme." This theme appears in the other movements, either as a secondary theme or once again in the form of variations or developments. The result is a work of great technical virtuosity, full of energy and expressiveness. The notes of the theme form the cellist's name.
