Description
When Bruno Messina commissioned me to write a work for voice and orchestra based on a text by Lord Byron, which would be premiered in French at the 2019 Berlioz Festival, I thought of his poem On the Death of a Young Lady . It was composed in memory of his recently deceased cousin Margaret Parker by a poet who was just fourteen years old. Two years earlier, Byron had already dedicated another poem to the young girl, in which he confided his love to her. A poem of mourning, a poignant page... the poem's gravity led me to set it to music for mezzo voice. The lamentation begins with a harp knell, continues in its central section with a denser counterpoint built on a chromatic collapse, and concludes with a swaying of chords opening onto an eternity that is less funereal than peaceful.

Premiere on August 22, 2019, as part of the Berlioz Festival in La Côte-Saint-André, by Albane CARRÈRE (mezzo-soprano) and the Orchestre National de Metz, conducted by David REILAND.
